High School Reunion: The Story Behind Savings Coach

My daughter’s high school Graduation has me reflecting on the origin of Savings Coach.

Twenty-five years ago, I attended my 10-year high school reunion. Like most people, I expected a night of laughs, memories, and catching up on life. What I didn’t expect was a defining moment that would shape the next chapter of my life—and eventually, the creation of Savings Coach.

That night, a clear divide stood out. Some classmates were well on their way to building wealth—investing strategically, buying homes, planning for their futures. Others, equally smart and driven, were still living paycheck to paycheck, burdened by debt or unsure how to get ahead financially.

It wasn’t about how hard they worked. It was about whether they had access to the right knowledge, tools, and support. And most importantly, being intentional.

That was the spark. I launched Savings Coach not just as a business, but as a mission—to help close that gap. To walk alongside people who felt stuck, confused, or overwhelmed by money, and show them how to create a plan, build confidence, and reach financial freedom. To encourage investing at a younger age because the power of compounding interest takes time to really materialize.

Today, it’s been 25 years since that reunion—and I can tell you this: the gap still exists. No one teaches us how to manage money. We’re taught how to earn it, but not how to keep it, grow it, or use it in a way that aligns with our values and goals.  Sure there are great technologies to help you save, but there are equally technologies devised to encourage you to spend leading to the same net effect of living paycheck to paycheck and just as in debt.

The solution is still the same, to have someone in your life encouraging you to be intentional with saving and investing before it’s all spent by the end of the month. Also having someone you trust to talk through the numbers and the consequences when expensive decisions need to be made. And the best part, to have a cheerleader in your life to congratulate you and reassure you that you are doing well and on the right path to financial independence.

Financial freedom isn’t just a dream. It’s a skillset, a mindset, and a process—and it’s one we can build together.

No matter where you're starting from, Savings Coach is here to help you create a better future—for yourself, and for the generations coming after you.

I am feeling re-energized having Josh Miller join Savings Coach with his passion for budgeting and investing. And we are excited to roll out the Race to $100k program to a new generation of young professionals ready to springboard their financial future.
